Event #10 @ Arlington Ridge Golf Club
The 2012 Leesburg Open
Leesburg, FL

Brendon Ehlers of Evanston, WY scored his first FPGTour victory today firing rounds of 66-67 to gain entry in a two-way sudden-death play-off with with first round co-leader Justin Lower of Canton, OH. The two matched scores of 9-under par 133, over the 6700 yard Arlington Ridge layout besting the field by a single stroke. It took only one extra hole to crown Ehlers the victor, after Lower missed his birdie putt from 15 feet. Ehlers, just inside him, took advantage of the open door and rolled in his birdie for the win.
The FPGTour heads north again to New Smyrna Beach for the ever popular Indian River Open, the second oldest tournament in the FPGTour's history dating back some 51 years.  The 2012 IRO has a record size field of 140 players vying for this years Championship next weekend at New Smyrna Beach Municipal G.C., February 4-5.

Event #9 @ Venetian Bay Golf Club
The 2012 Volusia County Open
New Smyrna Beach, FL

A couple of perfect days, at a perfectly groomed Golf Course led to a second FPGTour victory in just three weeks for Ponte Vedra Beach resident Jeff Dennis. Dennis opened with a 5-under par 67 that left him sitting (are you ready for this?) four shots back of first round leader Joe Ida of Ft. Scott, Kansas. Ida opened with a new Competitive Course record of 9-under par 63. Jeez uh wee.... Not to be short changed, Dennis then returned the favor, and tied the new Competitive Course record with his own 63 in the final round, but wait, it gets better.....His 36-hole total of 14-under par was only good enough to finish in a two-way tie atop the leaderboard with Nick Lindheim of Indian Harbor Beach, who was busy following his opening round of 7-under 65 with another 65....I know what your thinking, this course must be a piece of cake..WRONG....That could not be further from the truth..At 7,072 yards, with the wind blowing 25-30, the greens rolling 11 on the stimp, these guys just flat out played some golf. Ok, now comes the sudden-death play-off, and they head to the par 4 10th hole which they both par...No biggie...We head to the par 5 11th, with the sun setting fast, and the temp dropping, both players drive it within a yard (distance wise) of each other, Dennis in the fairway, and Lindheim found the rough. Lindheim's second finds the water, Dennis is hole high but left of the green by 40 yards, a drop by Lindheim (who's still in the rough) now hitting his fourth shot, ends up 8 inches from the hole. you had to be there, wow.  Dennis , now with the pressure on and still 40 yards away from the hole and in the rough himself, hits one of the best pitch shots EVER, landing it just short of the fringe, going away from him, downhill, towards the water, and it stops within 24 inches. Jeff makes the putt for birdie and the win. Congrats to both for a great Championship.

Anyone looking for one fantastic Golf Course to play while visiting Central Florida needs to do themselves a favor and call Lenny Varacelli, the PGA Professional at this facility. This place is truly a hidden gem, easy access from Orlando and the attractions, and should be put at the top of your "Must Play" list.

Event #8 @ Kissimmee Golf Club
The 2012 Kissimmee Open
Kissimmee, FL

Mother nature hit us hard on Sunday, delaying the start of the 2012 Kissimmee Open by some 50 minutes, not exactly what we needed with a full field and limited daylight hours. But in the end, Chris Erwin of Thompson Station, TN emerged the winner after defeating 3 other players in a sudden death play-off. Erwin opened the event with a 7-under par 65 leaving him clear of the field by two strokes at the end of day one. But after a long frost delay put everyone on edge to start Sundays final round, Chris could only manage a 1-under par round of 71 that included a bogey at his final hole, and with daylight almost gone, in a four way tie with Chas Narramore, Mike Tulacz, and Chris Ross. A birdie 4 at the par 5 1st hole left him still tied with Chas Narramore of Kingston, TN and the two headed to the par 4 second with barely enough light to tie your shoe. Erwin played his second shot to less then a foot and tapped in for another birdie and the win. My heartfelt thanks to all the competitors who were left to play in the late hours for making such a gallant effort to complete their rounds, and the event itself.

The FPGTour travels to New Smyrna Beach for the Volusia County Open next weekend at Venetian Bay. We are closing in on 90 players for this event.
